Train of thought

Taking a seat and enjoying the show of Autumn in New England.
  • Picked up bagged some leaves that had fallen off the trees.
  • Finally got a haircut. Much needed and I really like how it came out.
  • Went to the store to get some minor snacks for myself
  • Went to the Depot to get some batteries and a nice celosia I saw last week on sale. The batteries are for the exercise bike we got for free last week. Good model. How often it actually gets used – time will tell. It works!
  • Caught up on a bunch of little things around here.
  • For some reason, the town is ripping up the grass edgings along the street – I imagine they are going to replant it new?

Moodling

Boston Common

I’m currently in training learning how to administer an LMS (Learning Management System) called Moodle. It’s basically a tool that allows teachers and such to provide online courses to their students and it allows them to do grades and other things of that sort all online. Could be a new direction for me, so I’m giving it the old try.

The Best of Autumn

Autumn scene along a river in Norton, MA.

Beautiful couple of days here – decided to spend it doing a bit of leaf peeping, and saying hello to our animal friends down at the sanctuary. Also stopped by an apple orchard and got some apples for making some apple stuff probably later today, a huge butternut squash from the farm, and some other grocery odds and ends. Also getting the place ready for the upcoming seasons, shutting down the outdoor hoses, moving the grill into the storage shed, etc.

Halloween is coming. Old cemetery in Wrentham, MA.

Joker

Went and saw the movie Joker this afternoon with some friends. I had heard mixed reviews about it going in. Some people loved it, others didn’t.

Yes, it is disturbing, but I kinda liked it. I mean, the Joker is a homicidal maniac after all. This film kind of delves into why he became that way. I didn’t realize he was so much older than Batman however.

Rainy Friday Minutiae

Spent a good part of yesterday reading another book I got from a little library – Still Alice. It was a movie a little while ago too. I’m digging it. Did some chores around the house, went to Home Depot to pick up some things. Had lunch at Burger King (got the original chicken sandwich meal). Trying to figure out why one of LD’s tire sensors is giving incorrect results – even though I went to fill it up in the rain. Probably just needs a reset. Caught the latest episodes of Supergirl (guilty pleasure) and Real Money (was possibly the last episode – ended on a good note I thought if it is). For dinner picked up some fish from an awesome Greek place down by the airport – however they apparently forgot to include a salad which was a bummer but the weather made me not want to go back so I didn’t. Fell asleep on the ouch by 8. That kind of day I guess.

Barbells, Sean Jr., and Books

“Barbell” appetizers!

Some friends of ours are opening a gym, so to celebrate them we created these “barbell” appetizers where the weights consist of different fruits for last night’s get together. We also ended up playing some games, including Scattergories (which is fun but hard, although I did learn from tricks from LD’s friend who visited a while back) and something they brought over called Mexican Train which uses dominoes (and I didn’t care for).

Sean Connery Jr. – getting bigger every day!

Our pumpkin, loving called Sean Connery Jr. because the seeds we planted were from a pumpkin I got the seeds from last year (obtained from same friends mentioned above) and they had named Sean Connery. (The reason why it was named that is a long story that goes back to a previous party outing with them).

We dropped off a bunch of books we had lying around from little libraries and deposited them at a bunch of different little libraries. While there I picked up two new books to read: The Golden King: The World of Tutankhamun (which I know a lot about already as I’m a big ancient Egypt buff – but I do find this book a great introduction to the Boy King) and Proof of Collusion: How Trump Betrayed America. Looks interesting so I’ll give it a read and it seems topical to what’s been going on in the news recently.

Niceties

Check out this nice email this morning.

Mark,

Thanks so much for sending this over. It’s been a crazy week since the contract ended but I want you to know that I will truly miss working with you. Your hard work over the years made a lot of the things I’ve accomplished with x possible and it truly was invaluable.

I wish you the best in everything moving forward.

Regards,

That was so nice! I do miss working on that job – it really helped me out a lot. Meanwhile I’m currently in limbo awaiting whats coming down the pike….somewhat apprehensive of what’s to come.

Pre-Game

Watched a good Dateline last night, called The thing about Pam. It was a really good one – usually the Keith Morrison narrated ones are the best anyway, as is this one. That lady was a whack-a-doo. Also saw a thing on Elton John detailing the 10 most important moments in his life which I think I’m going to use for a future post, except post my 10 most important life moments. I have 3 so far, I think you might know what one of them is already.

Well, it’s soon off to the airport to pick up our house guest for the next few days! Thinking we’ll take her to a WaterFire lighting tonight.

Losing Out

We lost the proposal that I was hoping we’d win. Kind of a bummer for me, because that project kept me busy and I was controlling my own destiny a bit. Feeling a little depressed over it actually. The firm that won I didn’t think did the kind of work they were asking for, and for more money, so I’m not sure what the decision process was – maybe they were just sick of us after almost 10 years. Maybe it’ll bite them someday, but probably not. I personally think they made a mistake, and not to toot my own horn, but there’s no way they’ll get the same level of service that I was giving them, at least not at first. But it wasn’t up to me, and they’ll survive. The question is will I? Where do I go from here? I’ll have to try to find some other stuff to do.

Working for a consulting firm kinda sucks sometimes. Oftentimes I wish I could just work at a job where you know what it is day in and day out, and you don’t have to worry about billing and getting your utilization numbers up all the time. I not really complaining too much though – in a lot of ways it has been a dream job for me.. That’s what was nice about this project though – it kept me safe. Perhaps, I’ve become too complacent, and if so, then that’s all on me. Then again, maybe I’m being overly dramatic. Perhaps something positive could occur out of all this. New opportunities could lie ahead. I guess I just don’t like that it wasn’t on my terms.

We have a friend flying in from out of state to visit for a while, so it might be a nice distraction for a day or two. Meanwhile, the city is jack hammering the street out in front of the house in preparation for repaving it. Loud and annoying.

Fall is in the Air

Rockport, MA

Waking up this morning, one could definitely tell that fall is in the air, as it’s starting to get a bit chilly. It’s supposed to be hot this upcoming weekend though. Pretty soon the leaves should change and be starting to fall off the trees. Not sure if the colder weather is doing anything great for my gimpy knee. I’ve been trying to work it out slowly. Seems to be getting a little better – mostly going down stairs is the toughest part right now.

From the archives: A fall scene from 2015.

Anyways, about this shot – how many creatures can you spot in it and of what species? There’s quite a few! I believe this was taken from a water body alongside a major road in Braintree of all places – proving to me that you can pretty much find beauty in most places if you just take the time to look!

Couple of Small Updates

Let’s see. I sent in one of my Gloucester photos for possible inclusion into a future Cape Ann Calendar. Of course, the editors would have to think it was worthy of putting in there but I figured I’d give it a shot and see what happens. We’ll see – I’ll be sure to announce it here if it actually happens.

The Painted Lady Butter – seen at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester, MA.

A while back I had mentioned that a bunny in the back yard (nicknamed Brazen because she seemed rather brave to me) was building some sort of nest under a hydrangea by the back patio. I’ve checked the area and the nest is still there, covered up with leaves and straw, but remains empty, and I haven’t seen the rabbit in a while. It may be possible that she decided not to use it, which is rather unfortunate. I’ll keep checking now and then to keep tabs on it but it may not be happening there.

My knee is starting to feel a little better, but damn, I’m still hobbling around. I guess I’m not as mobile as I used to be, getting older and all. That kinda sucks.

Sean the pumpkin is really coming along – although the little pumpkin growing on the vine is still la yellow color. When does it start turning orange? Googling around it says they should get sun – I may need to pair back a leaf or two that seems to be obstructing it. There’s also another pumpkin starting to form further on down the vine as well, although that one is still very small.

Rainy Saturday

Swung by Earth-1 this morning to take care of some stuff. While I was paying a bill, I headed into the bookstore next store and picked up a copy of a new book, The Known, The Secret, the Forgotten: A Memoir by Joan Wheelis. It’s even an autographed copy. I had this one on my Goodreads for a while, it sounded pretty good so I decided to give it a shot – so that’s my current reading assignment.

It is ridiculously difficult to get around Somerville with all the construction going on . I literally could not get to where I wanted to due to Beacon Street being closed, so I had to go to Porter Square instead (by way of Harvard Sq.) – which is how I ended up at the bookstore.

Television Evenings

This shot just screams “Boston” to me.

Ended up watching the TV version of IT last night, having only seen bits and pieces of it over the years and thinking it was corny. But actually, when you watch it straight from On Demand, it actually wasn’t all that bad! I always figured John Ritter was playing the lead character, but he actually doesn’t.

Cobble Streets

Acorn Street Again.

This atmospheric cobblestone alleyway is Boston’s famous narrowest street. It was once home to artisans and to the service people who worked for the adjacent mansion dwellers. On the north side of the street, brick walls enclose examples of Beacon Hill’s hidden gardens.
